Cheryl Mackey Smith was born and raised in Scotia, New York. She moved with her parents to Central Florida in 1971. She graduated from Jacksonville University with a degree in Elementary Education, and soon added Art Education to her certificate. With husband, Randall’s encouragement, she showed her watercolor work in Florida art festivals and galleries in the 1970’s and 1980’s. She was a member of the Creative Art Gallery, coop in Winter Park and Maitland, and was a member of McRae Art Studios in Winter Park for almost 30 years.

Cheryl Mackey Smith began her art career painting graphic-stylized watercolors of mountain and marsh scenes. She would cut them into small squares and circles or roll and fold the little paintings into tubes and other shapes. These pieces were framed in shadow boxes creating patterns and designs. She then moved into papermaking, and eventually into using clay as the basis for her work. Cheryl started creating small tubes and sculpted sheets and pieces from paper clay. After experimenting with different clay bodies, she has discovered that porcelain and sometimes, paper clay, continue to give the best results for her pieces. The clay is all hand-formed, textured, fired, then sometimes burned in a pit-fire to add natural color. The pieces are then affixed to an archival backing board.

Cheryl and her husband have recently relocated to Fairview, NC, just outside of Asheville, where she maintains a studio in her home.
