Rey D Alfonso’s artistic journey began in his hometown of Matanzas, Cuba, on the northern coast of the island, about 50 miles east of Havana. There, when Alfonso was just 12 he began working long hours at his uncle’s metal shop, where he restored pre-1959 American cars, adding bright new layers of paint to the aging metal. After escaping his homeland at age 17, Alfonso arrived in the U.S. where he forged his artistic identity through sculpture and painting.
Today Alfonso works on Baltic Birch panels with pure pigments and layers of waxes, oils and other media that he heats with a torch and engraves with hand made tools. Artifacts such as old wooden oars, antique cigar boxes, and metal plaques from disappearing industries are fashioned into reflections of his life’s journey.
