Medium: Mixed Media
Booth #: GS14C
Two years into college studying architecture, I left school to focus on my stained glass studio that had evolved out of a simple hobby. After many years of surviving the ups and downs of living as an artist, I entered the corporate world and after 12 years, never having given up on glass entirely, returned to it full time. Inspired by a crude bird bath full of broken pottery, I wondered if I could cast my glass in concrete, offering far more possibilities than a stained glass window. As always, entirely self taught, I took a year of trial and error to explore this idea, then never looked back. Originally using concrete only as a vessel to carry my glass designs, the concrete eventually became the primary medium. The major theme of my work leans toward architecture, primarily basic structures of shelter, whether it be a single sanctuary in a vast plain or an entire community. The exploration of our relationship to the built environment and the feelings of belonging or alienation that can arise from the perception of place is a basic intent.
