Artist bio: Although an avid art enthusiast growing up, Cavan earned her degree in history from Brown University. After spending the early part of her adult life in the corporate world in Chicago, Cavan decided to pursue her love of art when New Mexico's clarity of light, rich feeling of tradition and strong sense of place pulled her “home”. She and her husband quit their corporate jobs and moved to the mountains of northern New Mexico. Shortly thereafter, she began working with oil pastels.Cavan combines her love of history with her passion for the New Mexico landscape to create art that reflects the timelessness of that subject matter. Relying on photographs, sketches and memories of places she has found on the back roads of New Mexico, Cavan uses vibrant, saturated colors, bold compositions and slightly altered perspectives to present, rather than represent, this special place. Her “rose colored” glasses interpret the scenes with heightened color. After living for 20 years in the little village of Angel Fire, she and her husband recently moved to the big city of Santa Fe, where she’s finding new and varied inspiration.
