Artist bio: Over the years my artful pursuits have taken a very unconventional path. From an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science to five years in the finance industry, it took me a decade to realize that I am my happiest self when I create. What was originally a recreational escape from the grind of academic and corporate existence is now an essential part of who I am and who I strive to become.
My recent work is inspired by my time spent in the beautiful and mythic realm of West Texas, particularly influenced by a few poignant encounters that bordered on the surreal. Though my memory of these experiences continues to warp over time, the overarching themes of Fear, Death, and The Unknown have remained central figures in my retelling of these encounters, and in my paintings that have emerged as a result. I continue to draw influence from these experiences, and my work reflects the struggle and angst that result from run-ins with these dark figures. I maintain a light and whimsical style counter to the somber subject matter by layering vibrant acrylic paint over endlessly hopeful canvas, creating spirited, dreamlike scenes.
Artist Statement: I write out a description of the scene in pen, I sketch the description into a chaotic draft on paper, I transcribe the chaos onto canvas using a light acrylic underpainting, I then layer vivid acrylic paint into the scene until the description is accurately rendered. Isolation coat, then varnish.
