Artist Bio
Molly Spain has established a rich and dynamic career in making mixed-media sculpture and 2-dimensional artworks. Resourceful, inventive, skilled, and rigorous in her exploration of materials, she uses a sophisticated sensibility of form in space to produce works that feel both deeply explored and elemental. Molly has exhibited at Olson Larsen Galleries, Grand View University, and Polk County Heritage Gallery, among others. She has also specialized in delivering a broad range of innovative commissioned artworks - small-scale and monumental works for both domestic and public settings. In 2021, she completed 'Critical Mass', a painting covering the entire exterior of the five-story Mainframe Studios building and has become a landmark in downtown Des Moines. The project is one of the largest murals in the country.
Molly's art is in public and private collections throughout the U.S., including featured installations at Des Moines Metro Opera, Hubbell Realty Des Moines, Home State Bank, and Surety Hotel. She has been Featured in The Guardian, The Atlantic's CityLab, and DSM Magazine.
