Artist Bio

I use porcelain and stoneware clay bodies that are wheel-thrown and altered to enhance curves in each form. Firing in a soda kiln, produces an earthy satin glaze skin and directional markings from the flame. This creates a rich background for the colorful, buoyant shapes and grounding incised lines. These one of kind soda fired clay pieces are made for artful daily living. The soda (think baking soda) and water solution that is sprayed into the kiln at high temperature, fuses with the clay body creating a unique glazed skin and at times a slightly raised orange peel-like surface. This is a much less predictable method of firing that yields unexpected gifts from the kiln.
