The Romantics: A Legacy of Power Pop and Rock & Roll Formed in 1977 in Detroit, Michigan, The Romantics emerged as one of the defining power pop and new wave bands of the late 1970s and 1980s. Known for their infectious melodies, high-energy performances, and sharp red leather outfits, the band combined elements of British Invasion rock with a
raw, American garage rock spirit. Their breakout came with their self-titled 1980 debut album, featuring the hit "What I Like About You", a song that remains a staple of classic rock radio, commercials, and sports stadiums worldwide.
In 1983, The Romantics reached their commercial peak with the album In
Heat, which went platinum and produced their biggest hit, "Talking in Your Sleep"—a top 10 smash on the Billboard Hot 100. The album also spawned the single "One in a Million," which further cemented their place in rock history. Other notable tracks in their catalog include "When I Look in Your Eyes," "Test of Time," and "Rock You Up."Throughout their career, The Romantics toured extensively, sharing stages with major acts like Cheap Trick, The Cars, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.
The Romantics have remained active, with Mike Skill, original guitar player,
leading various incarnations of the band. Their music continues to resonate, influencing generations of rock and power pop musicians, and their timeless anthems keep fans dancing decades after their debut.
